Understanding Student Ragging

Any conduct by a student, whether by words spoken or written or by an act which includes physical abuse, lewd acts, teasing, rough or rude treatment, indulging in rowdy, undisciplined and obscene activities which causes or is likely to cause annoyance, undue hardship, physical or psychological harm or mental trauma or raise apprehension or fear in a fresher / junior student or other students or forcing a student to do any act which such a student is not willing to do and which has the effect of causing or generating a sense of shame or embarrassment or danger to a student’s life or adversely affect the physique or psyche of a fresher or a junior student.
Ragging in any form is strictly prohibited both on and off campus. Violators of this rule will face severe consequences, with no tolerance for leniency. The initial actions against offenders include suspension and/or expulsion from the hostel or college.
Please be aware that under the Education Act of 1983, ragging is classified as a criminal offense and is punishable by up to one year of imprisonment. Additionally, the Supreme Court of India has recognized ragging as a criminal offense.
Ragging Acts Liable for Punishment
  • Encouragement or incitement to engage in ragging or involvement in a criminal conspiracy to commit ragging
  • Participation in unlawful gatherings or riots in the context of ragging
  • Causing public disturbances during ragging or breaching standards of decency and moral conduct
  • Inflicting physical injury or causing psychological trauma
  • Illegally restraining or confining someone
  • Using criminal force, committing assault, engaging in sexual misconduct, or unnatural offenses
  • Committing extortion, criminal trespass, intimidation, or property crimes
  • Engaging in verbal abuse, whether through spoken words, emails, letters, blogs, or public insults
  • Performing any act that disrupts or interferes with a student’s regular academic activities
Consequences for Ragging
Based on the severity and seriousness of the offense as determined by the institution's Anti-ragging Committee, those found guilty of ragging may face one or more of the following penalties:
  • Suspension from attending classes and loss of academic privileges
  • Revocation or suspension of scholarships, fellowships, and other benefits
  • Loss of campus placement opportunities and institutional recommendations
  • Prohibition from taking any tests, exams, or participating in evaluation processes
  • Withholding of academic results
  • Ban from representing the institution in regional, national, or international events, tournaments, youth festivals, etc.,
  • Suspension or expulsion from the hostel
  • Cancellation of admission
  • Suspension from the institution for a duration ranging from 1 to 8 semesters
  • Expulsion from the institution and a ban on admission to any other institution for a specified period
  • Imposition of fines
  • Collective punishment: If the individuals responsible for ragging are not identified, the institution may impose collective punishment to encourage community pressure against ragging
  • Additionally, for every incident of ragging, a First Information Report (FIR) will be lodged with local police authorities. This may result in rigorous imprisonment in accordance with the Supreme Court of India’s directives

Anti - ragging Committee

In alignment with the directives issued by AICTE and Anna University, a committee has been established to prevent and address incidents of ragging, offering support to affected students. Empowered by these guidelines, the committee has the authority to implement strict measures against those found guilty of such activities.

Responsibilities of the Committee
  • Host interactive sessions to encourage positive interactions between new and senior students, fostering a friendly and supportive campus environment
  • Inform incoming students about campus culture, rules, and regulations to ensure a smooth transition and understanding of institutional expectations
  • Conduct educational programs for senior students on the harmful effects of ragging and the disciplinary measures that will be enforced against such behavior
  • Post anti-ragging notices and emergency contact information prominently across campus to raise awareness and provide resources for assistance
